One of the favorite trout fishing destinations in the world for The Fly Shop

Over the past four seasons, as we’ve explored and gotten to know this remarkable fishery, we’ve really fallen in love with it’s unique qualities and look forward to the opportunity to share it with you. Here are a few of the reasons that make the Savan River in Kamchatka so special:

1. Exclusive Access: Our Russian partner, outfitter, and guide on the Savan, Dima Derevyegin, has a long term (20 year) government lease on the entire Savan River and its upper tributaries, guaranteeing that the only fishermen you’ll ever see here are your group.

2. Great location: The Savan is located in the southern part of the peninsula. It’s only a 50 minute helicopter ride from Petropavlovsk, and has an extremely good track record when it comes to helicopter transfers in and out of the camps. It is also a spring-fed river, so it runs very clear and the fishing is very stable, even in rough weather. Moreover, it is spectacularly beautiful with rolling hills leading to majestic volcanoes in the background.

3. Ideal combination of size and numbers: average fish on the Savan range from 16-24 inches, and they are the heaviest fish per length that we’ve ever found on the peninsula. We had guests last year landing rainbows that taped 25 inches, and were weighing in on scales at over eight pounds! Their girth is off the chart! And while you won’t catch a fish on every cast, you will typically enjoy enough action to make your arm sore at the end of the day, and you will see more rainbows in the backing than any river we have come across on the peninsula.

4. The fish are incredible! These are some of the most aggressive rainbow trout anywhere in the world. They attack streamers like a barracuda attacks a baitfish, and will often charge across the shallow river bottom to devour a mouse pattern twitching across the surface.
