Orvis is proud to introduce an exciting new fly reel in its growing collection of fly-fishing gear made in USA The new Mirage reel is the most sophisticated, technologically advanced reel Orvis has ever made.
Unlike other so-called “US-made” reels, which obtain their parts from China or Korea and then assemble them in the United Sates, every part in the Mirage reel is made in USA except for a few small bearings that are imported from a precision bearing maker in Japan. The new Mirage utilizes a fully-sealed drag system with 34 drag surfaces and six different drag seals for redundant protection. Maximum drag is a full 16 pounds, which will slow the biggest game fish you can hook on a fly rod, yet the startup inertia is minimal to eliminate tippet breakage on an initial run.
Another unique feature is finer control at the low end of the drag, so the angler can go quickly from line-stripping drag to fighting drag with minimal adjustment. And a hard stop at maximum drag ensures you always know when you have tightened the drag to the full 16 pounds. A further refinement to this innovative drag design is a patent-pending ball-and-ramp drag adjustment for finer control, unlike simple screw-type mechanisms in conventional disc drags.
The spindle is even made from a single piece of titanium, for long life and flawless operation. The reel has a Type III anodizing, which is harder and thicker than Type II and is the standard for high-wear aerospace parts and high quality firearms.
That comes in very handy when a fast-running fish makes a quick run at the boat and you need to keep a tight line. Every part of the reel has been engineered to give the fly fisher the finest experience on the water and a tool to admire with every cast, from the low-profile spool counterweight that does not get in the way to the smooth reel foot radius that prevents kinks in the leader when wrapping it around the reel foot.
