Soft Hackle Wet Flies
By Chris Marshall

The only flies I used when I first began to fiddle with a fly rod were sparsely-tied, soft-hackled patterns. The flies were all wet patterns and almost all wingless but they were very effective in the turbulent freestone streams we fished.

Chris Marshall explains why even though the basic design of the patterns is hundreds of years old, it's deadly for fishing for trout and other species in fast water anywhere in the world.

As fly fishers we’re constantly seeking different ways of presenting the fly in order to get the optimum drag-free cast and to avoid spooking the fish.

As fly fishers we're constantly seeking different ways of presenting the fly in order to get the optimum drag-free cast and to avoid spooking the fish.

The curve cast is an effective way of doing this, for it enables the caster to place the line and leader on the water with an upstream curve, which not only helps to prevent drag, but also ensures that the fly precedes the leader and will be the first thing the fish will see on the downstream float.
