Portugal is the host country for the XVIII European Fly Fishing Championship, which will run from 14 to 21 May 2017.

Some of the waters that will be fished during the competition:

The river Vez, which has its natural course still intact, besides its wild trout also has crystal clear water, without any pollution and that you can still drink. It crosses mountains of the Alto Minho that have been throughout the centuries cultivated in terraces, that confers a unique landscape to the valley of this river. For its beauty and characteristics this region is known as the “Little Portuguese Tibet”. They are still caught in the waters of this mountain river, in addition to the wild brown trout, many sea trout and salmon. The wolf is a regular visitor of this region and who knows if, with any luck, some will be sighted during the days of the European Championship.

The Coura river is known for the abundance of trout in its waters. It runs initially in mountain but soon crosses soft valleys until arriving at the Minho river, of which it is tributary. Due to its quality as a salmonid river, it has been the setting, over the years, of the national fly fishing championships and also of many international fly fishing events.

The river Olo, another mountain river, is known not only for the wild trout and the purity of its waters, but for the beauty of the places that it crosses, some of them belonging to protected zones of the Alvão Natural Park. In it there is the highest natural waterfalls in Portugal, the “Fisgas do Ermelo”, Mondim de Basto. The small villages that are still lost in the mountains, built in granite, are testimony to the arduous life of its inhabitants.

The Falperra Lake, located in the Alvão mountain range, offers to the fishermen a natural scenery of extreme beauty and specially adapted to the practice of the sport fishing. In this region there is the largest Roman mining complex in Europe, the hot springs and gaseous waters of Pedras Salgadas, Vidago Golf, Casino and Chaves Spa, among other tourist attractions.
