Good bass and pollack on fly around Cork Harbour

Earlier in the year two German fly anglers went to the Fly Fishing Exhibition in Munich where they asked about a guide they had booked in Cobh for a week in June. Delighted at the positive response they got from the IFI stand about Richie Ryan the Eire Bass guide they were now happy about their booking.

They were mainly interested in fly fishing for pollack on the fly and the prospect of a bass also. This response at the fair was relayed to Richie by one of the fly fishermen. The burden of living up to the expectations (Jim Hendricks’ words ringing in Richie’s ears) of the visitors was palpable…

Richie tells us that the first day on the fly went well even though the water clarity was poor. Plenty of pollack were caught on the fly as requested but the bass were not playing ball. Day 2 and 6 bass were nailed on fly and lure. On the third day Benedikt Goetzfrid of Topwater-Productions Germany arrived as an extra angler onboard “Sea Hawk”. He was staying at Tír Na Spideoga with the famous pike guide Greg Latour.

Bene hooked up seven bass on the day , happy man. He was grinning from ear to ear as he’d never caught a bass before. Needless to say the guide was happy too! In fact all three tourists had never caught a bass so that was sorted. Richie was delighted that one of the visitors, Dirk Magnus, managed to catch a good few bass on the fly on a mark which had never produced before using that method. The guide had blanked on the fly there many times also, so well done Dirk!

Day 4 produced some great pollack on the fly but only one bass.

The tourists went away having seen Ireland at it’s best with the glorious weather and fishing memories to last a lifetime.
