Season on River Moy finishes with over 7000 salmon reported

An increase in angling effort for the final week of the salmon angling season led to a reported catch of 223 salmon. With over 7,000 salmon reported, the 2017 season is well ahead (+1,002 on 2016) of last year.

Overall, anglers and fishery owners were quite happy with this year’s salmon season which kicked off very well with good spring salmon angling. The early part of the grilse season also fished very well until higher water levels impacted on the fishing from mid-July onwards.

Both the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water and Mount Falcon Fishery yielded good numbers of salmon, with a high proportion released on these fisheries. Gannon’s also had a good week, while the Foxford Fishery and Rinanney each reported good numbers for the final days of the season.

The Cloongee Fishery recorded 24 salmon, while at East Mayo, eleven were caught. Patrick Bellamy, Christian Moranzoni and Gus Feillet, all France were amongst the successful anglers on the Cloongee Fishery. On East Mayo, Dan Gilman, US, had a six pounder on fly which was released, while Swiss visitor, Tobias Niederberger, landed a 4 lbs. salmon on spinner. Other successful anglers on East Mayo included Lothar Deeg, Germany, John McDonagh ,Galway, and Fergal Smyth from Dublin.
