Dermot Page reports on the Rathcon Winter League first round, fished at a mid October weekend…

Today was the 1st of the 2017/18 winter league qualifiers. 20 anglers fished with the top 5 qualifying for the final next spring. Despite good fishing conditions the day was tough with only 35 landed but a lot more lost. Many thanks to Southside Angling for sponsoring a prize. The results were:
• 1st Joe Winder – 6 fish
• 2nd Marius Lincevicius – 5 fish
• 3rd Sergej Kapustin – 4 fish
• 4th Aidan Heffernan – 3 fish
• 5th Darius Simcus – 3 fish
The biggest fish landed was 59 cm by Marius.

Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places.

 

The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.

Good fishing at first heat of Annamoe Winter League

Heat 1 of the Annamoe Winter League sponsored by Southside Angling was fished on Saturday 14th October. Nineteen anglers competed and seventeen of them landed a total of 68 trout.

All were measured and returned safely back into the lake.
Results
• 1st Nicholas Madden. 9 trout.
• 2nd Pat McDonnell 9 trout.
• 3rd. Julie Gerry 8 trout.
• 4th. Tony Finn 7 trout.
• 5th Patrick McDonnell 6 trout.
All of the above anglers qualify for the Grand Final on Saturday 9th December.
Heat 2 takes place on Sat. 28th October.
