RecFishing Forum to debate EU recreational fisheries report

A discussion on the eagerly awaited report into the ‘state of play of recreational fisheries in the EU’ will be the major topic of interest at the next meeting of the EFTTA and European Anglers Alliance (EAA) backed RecFish Forum.

MEP Norica Nicolai has presented a report to the European Parliament on the subject and it will be debated at the event in the Brussels Parliament Building on January 25. Among the speakers will be EFTTA CEO, Jean-Claude Bel. Jan Kappel, EFTTA Public Affairs Officer, said the association was happy with the content which emphasises recreational fishing’s importance in numbers of participants and socio-economics – local communities and tourism. “We are glad that there is a strong case made for better data on angling. The report also shows that our case for inclusion in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is becoming stronger,” said Jan.

“Now we hope that the report will pass the committee and plenary votes without being changed in the ‘wrong direction’. This RecFishing meeting is an opportunity to make sure that does not happen – the committee vote takes place a few days after the event.” The RecFishing Forum is being co-chaired by Nicolai and fellow MEP Werner Kuhn.
