Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Brooks grew up in a privileged family that owned a successful insurance company. In his youth, Joe struggled with alcohol addiction and was an outcast in his successful family. Although he had his struggles, fly fishing was a passion that kept him going. Joe left his family business and began writing about his fly fishing adventures and knowledge of the sport. He soon found himself writing for some of the top outdoor publications in the nation including Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and many others. His articles and books on fly fishing gained significant attention propelling him to become one of the most respected fly fishers in the industry. His love for the sport was unmistakable and his impact was felt by many others in the industry including the famous Lefty Kreh.

“This documentary is a great addition to our programming calendar,” Outdoor Sportsman Group Vice President of Programming, Planning and Development, Katie Gladstone said. “This untold story is a gem that anyone interested in good storytelling will enjoy.”

Developed by the great-nephews of the late Joe Brooks – Michael and Joe Brooks came up with the idea while fly fishing on a river in New Zealand. Being accomplished fly fishers themselves, the great-nephews know about the incredible life their great uncle lived and the impact he had on fly fishing, as well as the entire outdoor industry. The two set out to develop a documentary that tells the full story of their uncle’s incredible life.

The documentary will air exclusively on Father’s Day weekend, June 15–17 on Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network. The feature length documentary takes viewers through the life of the historic Joe Brooks and the challenges he overcame to become the one of the most famous fly fishers of all time.
