To get the very best performance and the longest life from a fly line it is important to keep it clean and in good condition, and RIO has a number of products that excel at this. Use a micro-abrasive cloth, like RIO’s Wonder Cloth to strips dirt out of the line’s pores. This reduces the chance of a line cracking, and keeps floating line tips riding high (dirt in the line’s pores is the commonest reason why floating line tips sink). The Wonder Cloth works perfectly well on floating, sinking or intermediate lines.
A silicone-based topical coating does wonders for the slickness of a fly line, and also acts as a kind of moisturizer – keeping the plastic coating from drying out, and reducing the chance of the line cracking as a result. RIO’s AgentX dressing is a very slick, high performance compound specially formulated to keep floating lines slick, floating high, and prolonging the life of the coating. Because of the silicon base, it is not recommended to use this type of dressing on a sinking or intermediate line.
If you are going on a trip, and want a quick, simple fix that slickens up your line and cleans off dust and dirt, look no further than RIO’s Fly Line Cleaning Towelette. Grab half a dozen and keep them in your bag or vest, and wipe your line down at the end of each day. These are particularly great in saltwater environments.
Check out this excellent video for the best way to use these products, and keep your line in peak condition at all times. A clean line shoots further, floats higher and lasts longer!
In case you missed it…
This week’s link to the previous RIO Fly Fishing Tip shows how to identify what the best kind of water is to fish a nymph and indicator in when fly fishing for trout in a river. Enjoy.
