Striped bass worth billions to US economy

Fishing for striped bass brings literally billions of dollars into the US economy, boosting coastal states and helping create thousands of jobs.

From Maine to North Carolina, the striped bass is proving its worth as part of the $125 billion value of the tackle industry across the USA – in fact it is valued at just under $8 billion each year.

A study commissioned by the McGraw Centre for Conservation Leadership and conducted by Southwick Associates, the US’ leading outdoor market research and economics firm, found that, in 2016, this fishery accounted for more than 48,000,000lb of landed fish by both commercial and recreational anglers.

The study was based in part on publicly available and recently revised National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) participation, landings, expenditure and economic data. Additionally, recreational contributions were based on trip and equipment expenditures made by anglers that could reasonably be attributed to striped bass fishing.

This total fishing activity contributed a total of $7.8 billion toward the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), with recreational anglers accounting for 90 per cent of the striped bass caught and 98 per cent of the total economic contributions from this fishery.

Other key findings of the study were that millions of anglers pursue striped bass from North Carolina to Maine each year, accounting for almost a third of all recreational fishing trips in the region and, despite a 24 per cent reduction in striped bass fishing trips between 2009 and 2016, the number of jobs supported by striped bass stayed steady and expenditures actually increased by nine per cent.
