Despite EU regulation to curb new hydropower, 8,785 projects are in the pipeline in Europe – mainly in the Alps and the Balkans – in addition to the 21,387 existing ones.
More than a quarter are planned in protected areas. This puts even more pressure on fragile freshwater biodiversity, says new study commissioned by Riverwatch, EuroNatur WWF & Geota.
