“When I was young, my dad had a subscription to Field & Stream magazine. I remember an article on fly fishing eastern streams by Ted Trueblood, where he detailed sure-fire trout catching secrets of guys like Fox & Marinaro. Borrowing my dad’s rod, reel and battered fly wallet, I headed to my local stream. After an hour or so of flailing away, I had either snapped off or tree’d all the contents of that old wallet and arriving home, announced to my father that I need more flies. Learning how the others had disappeared, my father said, “Boy, if you want to be a fly fisherman, you had better learn to tie flies”.”
