RIO Products: Identifying Chironomids

Chironomids are a very important food source for trout – particularly in lakes. They are the pupae of the midge family, which live underwater until it is time to swim to the surface and hatch into the adult. It is during this swim to the surface that they are most vulnerable to a trout, and trout love them! As a result, they are a vital pattern to have a selection of in your fly box.

In this video Simon points out the key characteristics of a chironomid – also known as a midge pupa, or a “buzzer” in the UK.
