Top brand lends support to women in fly fishing initiative

One of fly fishing’s foremost brands is behind a new event designed to accelerate the growth of women in fly fishing

Women Are Fly started May 13th at Simms At The River’s Edge, the longstanding fly shop in Bozeman, Montana. The two-day event is the evolution and progression of one of the largest women’s fly fishing gatherings in the country, Chica de Mayo, which began in 2009.

Now Women Are Fly will amplify the event’s original objectives to remove barriers of entry to fly fishing, help women feel confident in fly shops, share conservation updates and help develop a large and powerful network of passionate women anglers.

“These last two years have reminded us that fishing is more than an activity – it provides a connection to nature, people, and ourselves,” says Simms VP of Community and Culture Diane Bristol. “I’ve missed seeing these women and sharing our fishing passion. I’d like the chance to evolve this event with new activities. I’m especially excited to bring more people together to have a louder voice for conservation.”

Women are among the fastest growing participation categories in angling and Women Are Fly aims to engage more deeply and frequently with both experienced and novice women.

“We are all extremely proud of the growth, engagement and strength the women’s fly fishing community has gained over the past two years,” said Reba Brinkman of Simms at the River’s Edge.

“Now that we can comfortably host events in-person, we have a real opportunity to build upon the current momentum by engaging with more women more frequently and on a deeper, more personal level.”

Women Are Fly included a fashion show at the nearby Simms headquarters, a presentation about Montana conservation and volunteer opportunities, instruction on all aspects of fly fishing and focus groups. It then rolled into The Four Corners Fly Fishing Festival hosted by Simms and attended by representatives from Winston, Scott, Costa, Scientific Anglers, Orvis, Patagonia and more, with the opportunity to handle some of the newest products on the market.

Keynote speaker included fly-tyer, conservationist, guide, Simms ambassador and founder/owner of Riverside Anglers, Alice Owsley, who has been a member of the International Women Fly Fishers since its inception in 1996.
