California Fly Fisher, a beloved 31-year-old magazine that published its final issue last fall, is set to relaunch in both print and digital formats this July under the new leadership of Tracey Diaz.
“California is remarkable. Its diversity of waters and fisheries is unmatched by any other state in the lower 48. There’s so much here – California’s fly-fishing community, culture, and species deserve a magazine all their own,” says Diaz.
Joining Diaz as editor-at-large is George Revel, owner of Lost Coast Outfitters in San Francisco, a Master Certified Casting Instructor, and a three-time international fly-casting champion. Revel remarks, “I’ve been reading California Fly Fisher since I was a kid, and I’m thrilled to be part of its revival. My goal is to bring California angling to you in a way that allows you to relax, with stories and photography that inspire you to get involved. I aim to present facts, history, recipes, and opportunities that enrich your life on the water.”
Richard Anderson, the magazine’s founder and former editor/publisher, states, “Both Tracey and George bring fresh energy, insights, and perspectives to the magazine, and of course, a passion for fly fishing and for the angling adventures found throughout our state. I’m pleased California Fly Fisher will live on with them at the helm.”
With a fresh design and format, each issue of California Fly Fisher magazine and the accompanying digital site will inform, inspire, educate, and connect anglers across the Golden State and beyond. From the North Coast’s rugged steelhead to the Eastern Sierra’s elusive trout to surf fishing in San Diego, California’s remarkable diversity, abundance, and beauty will be celebrated and shared. The stories and pages will cover fisheries, rivers, and people, bringing them to life through captivating storytelling, expert insights, and stunning photography.
Diaz has been overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response from readers, stating, “I’ve been amazed by how strongly readers feel about the magazine. They are the most devoted audience with past issues stacked in their garage and subscribing since Issue 1. They have been so thankful that the magazine is returning, and I’m honoured Richard has passed me the baton or, more appropriately, the rod so I can give them that gift.”
