Streamer Tactics for Trout: The San Juan River with James Garrettson

Fulling Mill Fly Fishing: In this video Fulling Mill Ambassador James Garrettson and Fulling Mill Sales Rep Anthony Marrese of High Peaks Representation spend a morning talking streamer tactics for trout on New Mexico’s Famous San Juan River. The San Juan is known as one of the most technical tailwaters in the west, with fish regularly eating midges in the 24-28 size range. While it has an extremely high fish density and produces lots of huge trout, many are caught on light nymph rigs and it has a reputation as being a “bobber fishery.” James, however, is here to show you that is very much not the case. He’s spent years honing in his streamer craft, using patters that are far larger than what most would ever try on the river in order to target trophy trout.

James Garrettson is a full time fishing guide and a part time astro-physicist (not really). Originally from Northern Virginia, James started fly fishing at age 11 and never looked back. His unbridled enthusiasm for the sport landed him a job at Orvis before he could drive. After bouncing around the East Coast, Montana, Costa Rica, and the Pacific Northwest, James has finally planted roots in Northern New Mexico. There, he owns and operates  @AboutTrout , a guide service focused on creating a positive fly fishing experience for anglers of all skill sets. Whether you want to learn the fundamentals of fly fishing or explore new techniques like euro nymphing, they provide you with the highest level of service and patient instruction. They offer half and full day guided trips on the San Juan, Conejos (private) and Chama river. James has been an Ambassador for Fulling Mill for many years, and we’re thrilled to be able to work with him.
