Inland Fisheries Ireland confirms first salmon of the year caught and released on Lackagh River as International Year of the Salmon commences.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first salmon of 2019 has been caught and released on the Lackagh River in Co. Donegal according to Inland Fisheries Ireland<\/a>. Michael McCann of Templeard, Derry landed the first salmon in the Garden Pool on the Lackagh River at 9.25am yesterday, Tuesday 1st<\/sup> of January. The salmon, which weighed approximately five pounds and was caught on a single barbless hook before being released into the water, was also the first salmon caught and released during International Year of the Salmon<\/a> which takes place in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael McCann was one of 22\nanglers who were fishing on the Lackagh River at the time of the\ncatch. The river is not known for producing the first salmon of the\nangling season \u2013 in 2018, the first salmon was recorded on the\nRiver Drowes in Leitrim on the 30th<\/sup> of January while in\n2017 it was caught on the Munster Blackwater, Cork on the 1st<\/sup>\nof February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland\nFisheries Ireland said: \u201cI would like to congratulate Michael\nMcCann, on his catch which is highly coveted by anglers across the\ncountry. We are particularly delighted that the first salmon of 2019\nwas caught and released in a sustainable manner in Donegal in\ncompliance with the 2019 regulations. I would urge anglers to step up\ntheir conservation efforts and engage in catch & release angling\nin 2019. The New Year coincides with International Year of the Salmon\nwhich aims to raise awareness of some of the challenges facing salmon\nstocks across the Northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salmon populations have plummeted in recent years with the number of salmon returning to Irish shores decreasing by over 70 per cent, which is very concerning. We look forward to promoting this global initiative in Ireland which aims to bring people together to share knowledge, raise awareness and take action on how we can ensure the resilience of salmon in Ireland and across the Northern hemisphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Year of the Salmon is\na joint world-wide initiative of the North Atlantic Salmon\nConservation Organisation (NASCO) and the North Pacific Anadromous\nFish Commission (NPAFC) alongside other partners across the globe,\ncreating an international framework for collaborative outreach and\nresearch. It is hoped that this initiative will raise awareness of\nwhat humans can do to ensure salmon and their habitats are conserved\nand restored against a backdrop of several environmental factors\nwhich have contributed to their decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lackagh River is open to catch and release fishing during the 2019 season. The phone line is\ndesigned to encourage the reporting of incidents of illegal fishing,\nwater pollution and invasive species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
