EFTTA and the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) are joining forces with several non-government organisations (NGO\u2019s) to raise awareness about the importance of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) at its next RecFishing Forum meeting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The WFD was adopted seventeen years ago with the aim of protecting European waters and ensuring that they achieve \u2018good status\u2019 by a set deadline. However, in 2012 the European Commission acknowledged that Member States were far from reaching these objectives as nearly half of EU waters did not come up to good ecological status.<\/p>\n

The issue was planned to be discussed on Wednesday (March 22) in Brussels by members of the RecFishing Forum and other interested parties. The conference, the Water Framework Directive \u2013 Lifeline for European Waters, will be chaired by MEPs Ulrike Rodust, Frank Bogovic, Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy and Linn\u00e9a Engstr\u00f6m and opened by Norica Nicolai.<\/p>\n

\"\u201cThe
\u201cThe WFD represents a crucial piece of EU environmental legislation,\u201d says a representative of the RecFishing Forum. \u201cIt has greatly contributed to the improvement of water protection in the EU. A review process will start in 2019.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cWith that in mind the EAA and EFTTA have decided to enhance cooperation with several NGO\u2019s, such as the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), to raise awareness of how the WFD works and its correct implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Representatives from EFTTA, including Jean-Claude Bel (CEO), Janet Doyle (General Manager) and Marisol Pinillos (Membership and Communications Officer) will attend the event in Brussels this Wednesday.<\/p>\n
