Each year,\u00a0200 billion plastic bottles are produced. Unfortunately,\u00a0an estimated ten percent of these bottles\u00a0make their way into the ocean. At the current rate of plastic pollution, we could see more plastic than fish, by weight, in the world’s oceans by 2050! Although these numbers are overwhelming, the good news is that\u00a0by making small changes together\u00a0we can all help stem\u00a0the flow of plastic pollution. At Casa\u00a0Vieja, we pride ourselves in being a steward of the environment and\u00a0we are doing our part\u00a0by following the lead set by\u00a0Costa Del Mar<\/a>\u00a0and their\u00a0Kick Plastic campaign<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This\u00a0July at the International Convention of Allied Sporting Trades (ICAST)\u00a0Kristen Salazar, Owner and Director of Marketing at Casa\u00a0Vieja, was a panel speaker\u00a0for the launch of the Costal Del Mar\u00a0Kick Plastic Guide & Outfitter Program. During the talk, Kristen shared with the audience how Casa Vieja Lodge has been\u00a0eliminating plastic bottles at the lodge and their future\u00a0endeavors. This upcoming season\u00a0the Lodge will implement water dispensers throughout the grounds and provide clients with refillable YETI 26oz Ramblers to use during their stay.<\/p>\n

Another green change will be\u00a0new disposable containers for client\u00a0lunches\u00a0that are plant based instead of plastic or styrofoam. Also when enjoying a refreshing cocktail on the boat or back at the lodge, beverages will have\u00a0bamboo straws instead of\u00a0plastic straws.<\/p>\n

Phase II of the project will have the biggest impact and will take place on the boats. On average 28 plastic bottles of water are used daily on each boat, that’s about 252 plastic bottles of daily trash by the Casa Vieja Fleet! By working with YETI the\u00a0plan is to have a water dispenser\u00a0on board to refill client YETI Ramblers throughout the fishing day.\u00a0The end result\u00a0of these small changes add up to eliminate\u00a0close to 30,000 bottles of water in a single season!
