Some 25 actors, flytyers, organisers etc. of the EWF flyfishing show are making a trip to Strobler in Austria together this week. We are staying at the four star hotel Strobler Hof in Strobler, from where we can fish at least five rivers and some lakes; the rivers are managed by Hurch Flyfishing. Strobler Hof is a superb hotel with a fine restaurant, a Mexican bar and restaurant, spa, rooms for seminars, swimming pool, wellness area and much more. The hotel has been in the family Happ for several generations, Hannes Happ is not only a fine cook, but an enthusiastic flyfishermen himself too.
With Cora I fished the Ischler Ache on the Tuesday after the show. The day started with some showers, but the sun returned in the afternoon. The length of this stretch of the Ischler Ache is some 3,4 kilometers. The river flows through Bad Ischl and runs into the River Traun there. The water has a perfect hight at the moment and is perfectly clear.Only barbless flies are allowed here, and all fish have to be returned to the water. The river holds brown trout, rainbow trout, chub (picture), barbel and some other coarse fish.A more barren stretch of water outside Bad Ischl. We fished nymphs with an indicator on the leader or at the tip of the flyline, but had a few takes on dry flies as well. This 48 cm chub took a Leadhead fished close to the bottom, it was one of a group of some ten big chub that were moving close to shore. The last fish of the day goes back a little wiser.
