Western United States Snow Pack Report:
* Big Hole River Basin has highest snowpack in the state right at 117%. Stream flow Report –Mike Roberts, DNRC Big Hole River Basin Snowpack (3/21/16) = 117% of average based on the 1981 – 2010 median and the Beaverhead/Jefferson River Basins Snowpack (3/26/16) = 110% of average.
* According to the same report In most of Montana’s other River Basins the snowpack average is in the 70% to 90% average range. Also, a good part of Wyoming River Basins are in the middle 50% to high 80% of average range.
* Other State’s River Snowpack Percent of Average Range:
– Idaho’s River Basins Percent Of Average is in the middle -70% to low 90% range.
– Colorado’s River Basins Percent of average is in the low 70% to middle 90% range.
– California’s Three Statewide River Basins the Percent of Average is in the middle 50% to low 70% range.
At Five Rivers Lodge in Dillon, MT, we are getting ready for a spectacular season. With our current snowpack and more snow yet to come, our rivers are going to have a steady flow of cold water. That should mean the fish are going to be happy, hungry, and have a nasty disposition. After a few years of low water, this season is going to more than make up for the years of low water.
This spring, has already shown a great number of fish, all of them looking very healthy. The few warm springs days we have had have produced great dry fly fishing with fish getting active on streamers later in the day. We had a number of fish looking up at the Skwalla hatch on the Big Hole River this last weekend. With our main hatches yet to come, fishing has already been better than normal.
We should experience a normal runoff on all of our rivers this year, sending salmon flies skittering across the surface for explosive dry fly eats. The Golden Stones, Little Sallies, and major PMD & Caddis hatches should produce excellent dry fly fish throughout the summer. With the water levels holding great for the season, we are looking forward to epic blankets of Trico’s and exceptional Hopper fishing in August and September!!
