Leen Huisman has been building splitcane (fly)rods for some 35 years now. Next to that he also builds fly-reels for a good number of years now. On both subjects he gave a well attended presentation in Zwolle (NL).
Leen Huisman has been a teacher for many years, a point that became apparent right from the start of the presentation.
The presentation was organized by the RANO (section of the Dutch Federation of Fly-Fishers) at the S10 Zalencentrum in Zwolle and it was visited by some thirty interested fly-fishers and rod-builders.
Peter den Hollander (second from the right) organizes with Patrick Mercy a contact day for splitcane rod-builders at the Berenkuil (Putten) on the 22nd of April, 2017.
A lot of subjects that are of importance when building splitcane rods passed by: the choice of bamboo, drying, splicing, heating and drying in an oven, glueing the strips etc.
During the pause ideas on rod-building were exchanged as well.
Attention for details results in top-products.
Building a single splitcane rod will take at least forty hours, but they surely have their advantages in the lighter line classes.
Some literature for the rod-builder.
Measuring and figuring out the best tapers are an important part of creating top-rods.
Leen has been building fly-reels from titanium for a good many years now!
A fly-reel that has been used on saltwater to fly-fish for seatrout for some thirty years now, the salty environment does not seem to have an influence on the L.H. Design fly-reel.
A nice example of one of the modern designs by Leen Huisman.
