No great hatch at Corrib but some good trout landed

Declan Gibbons, IFI Galway, reported around the 20th of March from the shores of Lough Corrib where the conditions conspired against decent hatches of fly, but some good trout were landed all the same…

In the Cong area on Tuesday last Frank Costello (+353 (0)87 – 2524 253) was guiding Ashford Castle guest Steve Newmanand has good sport both trolling and wet fly fishing landing three fish, Best fish was four pounds in weight. In the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy (+353 (0)87 – 9604 170) and his Brother Mike on Tuesday last enjoyed a days fishing landing five fish for a weight of seven and a half pounds with the best fish being two and a quarter pounds.

Staying in the Oughterard area Gerry Molloy was fishing for a few hours on Sunday afternoon last and had one fish on wets two and three quarter pounds.
The Commercial Boat Club in Woodquay in Galway Hosted their Spring Time Open Competition in which 46 anglers participated in and weighed in 19 trout. Moycullen man Mark Regan took the Top prize on the day landing two trout for 7.35 lbs. Mark also had Heaviest Fish of 4.65 lbs. Fergus Byrne was second with two trout for 5.9 Lbs and Third place went to Leitrim Angler Gene Haran with two fish for 4.15 lbs

In the Cornamona area Richard Molloy (+353 (0)87 – 2879 339) from Ballard Shore Boat Hire and Self Catering reports of a quite week due to weather conditions but Ashbourne Angler Paul Greaghty was out on Thursday last and had a lovely fish of eight pounds trolling and sportingly released.
Staying in the Cornamona area The Cornamona & District Anglers Members Competition was hosted on Sunday last. The competition was fished as a Heaviest fish competition. 13 Anglers took part and 8 caught fish totalling 17.84 lbs with an average of 2.23 lbs per fish.
– 1st Barry Molloy 3.31 lbs
– 2nd Peter Curran 3.04 lbs
– 3rd Mike Shanks 2.73 lbs.

In the Greenfields area Father and Son Duo Larry and John McCarthy from Corrib View Lodge, Glencorrib (+353 (0)87 – 9135 222) enjoyed a days fishing on Sunday last using buzzer and landed six fish between a pound and a half and two and a half pounds all sportingly released.
Friends Frank Reilly and Peter McGuinness on Sunday last enjoyed their first outing of the year and landed six fish on wet fly patterns also in the Greenfields area.
