Finnish photographer Pasi Visakivi is a Catch Magazine favorite.

Over the past 10 years, Pasi has contributed more than a handful of excellent photo essays of fly fishing in the far northern hemisphere. Most of his photos are shot on Finnish brown trout rivers near his home. He’s also featured photo essays of several salmon rivers in Norway and Sweden.

 

 

“I have been interested in photography from a very young age,” says Pasi. “But it did not develop into a significant hobby until I joined the editorial board of the Finnish fly fishing magazine called Pohjolan Perhokalastaja in 2001.”

Since then, Pasi’s taken a special interest in fly fishing photography. As a fly fisherman first and foremost, he now carries a camera just as often as a fly rod. “I really like to shoot widely different subjects of fly fishing lifestyle – from wide angle landscapes to macro shots of insects. I also like to cover flies and gear set-ups especially in wintertime when fly fishing basically stops for a few months. I have a studio strobe system that I use for that purpose. In addition I also do some portrait, advertising, event and architecture photographing.”

 

 

In this issue of Catch Magazine, Pasi rocks it with “Flies and Fly Tyers from the North.”  These beautiful shots capture the artistry and absolute intricacy involved in each fly. Pasi’s collection comes from the best of the best Finnish fly tyers, and he educates us about the history and current talent in this specialty craft.
