A message by Meghan and the Save Bristol Bay team at Trout Unlimited to all Bristol Bay supporters:
I am overjoyed to write to you with great news for Bristol Bay.
Today, the Army Corps of Engineers delivered a major blow to the proposed Pebble mine by finding that the project fails to meet Clean Water Act standards and that it will not issue a permit for the current mine plan.
This confirms what we’ve said for more than a decade: a place as unique, awe-inspiring and productive as the Bristol Bay region is the wrong place for this massive mine. We are breathing a sigh of relief along with sportsmen and women across the globe, the communities of Bristol Bay, commercial fishing families, and millions more who cherish this unique region.
Today’s announcement creates a huge hurdle for Pebble to have to overcome. This good news was made possible by those of you who spoke up time and again, donated to the campaign, sent letters and spread the word. You made the difference.
Our work is not done
As we applaud this announcement by the Army Corps, we recognize our work is not done. We still need you to help make sure we defeat the proposed Pebble Mine for good.
We have always had two goals with respect to Bristol Bay:
1. Stop the proposed Pebble Mine, then
2. Secure up-front, permanent protections so the Bristol Bay region can remain as pristine and productive as it is now, forever.
Today, we celebrate as we are getting closer. Tomorrow, we come back to work so that the people and fish of Bristol Bay never have to worry about the proposed Pebble mine (or projects like it) again.
We hope you’ll stay with us as we work toward permanent protections for Bristol Bay.
