RIO Products: Identifying Soft Hackles

This RIO Fly Fishing Tip shows how to identify a “soft hackle”. Soft hackles, also known as “spiders” in the UK, are a type of fly that is usually fished under water to deadly effect. They represent nymphs, drowned insects, emergers, and a host of other food sources that trout love and, as a result, are an important fly style to have in your box.

RIO’s Fly Fishing Tips series are short, less-than-a-minute videos, each bought to you by a RIO employee or ambassador and showing a single fly fishing tip to help you become a better fly fisher. The series includes freshwater, saltwater and Spey topics, and a mix of casting, fishing and gear tips – some basic, some technical, and everything in between.
