Delayed 30th International Fly Tying Symposium rescheduled for November 20-21

The 30th annual International Fly Tying Symposium – delayed a year due to the worldwide pandemic – has been rescheduled for November 20-21, 2021, in the Parsippany Hilton Hotel, announced event founder and director Chuck Furimsky. Fly tiers from around the globe will meet, greet and demonstrate their art at the weekend event.

The host hotel is at 1 Hilton Court, Parsippany, New Jersey, some 51 miles or about an hour drive from New York’s J. F. Kennedy Airport in the Mack-Cali Business Campus. The site “provides the Symposium more space than previous venues, a pre-function entrance, larger banquet facilities, and a variety of restaurants, coffee shop plus free parking,” explained Furimsky.

It is “the largest event for fly tying with more than 100 of the world’s best fly tiers plus every book, video and material on display and for sale,” he added. Admission to the 2021 Symposium is $15 Saturday, $12 Sunday or $22 for a two day pass. Children under age 16 are free while active military with ID is $10. Lectures, seminars, featured fly tiers and book signings are scheduled for both days along with fly tying classes with the experts.

New for 2021

New for 2021 is a no-entry-fee fly tying competition on Saturday afternoon with $100 Orvis gift certificates to each of the top three contestants. Judges will be Bob Clouser, Dave Klausmeyer, Bob Popovics, Tim Cammisa, Blane Chocklett, and Tim Flagler with European tiers added to the judging panel closer to the event.

Another addition is a “Wall of Realism” featuring realistic artificial fly creations. Creators of the flies will be on hand to share their techniques and answer questions. Among the realistic tiers scheduled are Bill Blackstone, from California; Bob Mead, New York; and Fred Hannie, Louisiana, with more experts coming aboard, assured Furimsky.

The Symposium itself will feature dozens of booths showing and selling the latest fly tying products and materials. There are seminars every hour, an hourly Featured Tier, and Author’s Booth. Private morning and afternoon fly tying classes with select instructors are also available. Attendees will receive a participant directory listing celebrity tiers and the patterns they are planning to demonstrate.
