Sea Trout in Scotland | Lana Richardson & Colin Macleod

Filmed by the talented Patrick Tillard, part two of our Fly Fishing the Hebrides series follows Fulling Mill Ambassadors Lana Richardson and Colin Macleod as they chase sea trout on the fly. While part one focused on coastal rivers, sea pools, and inland lochs, part two highlights the saltwater fly fishing opportunities for sea trout and salmon. Throughout the film, Lana and Colin discuss what makes the region so special, their go-to flies and tactics to be successful, and how to approach fishing tidal waters for salmon and sea trout.

In order to tie flies that catch fish, you have to be able to identify what the fish are eating and know how to best present them under a range of conditions. From the creation of the Kip Fly sand eel imitation—crafted with hair from Colin’s dog named Kip—to trusted salmon and sea trout patterns like the gammarus shrimp and Colin’s Rag Worm imitation, this video not only inspires anglers to get out and fish but also shows that you can succeed with just a few confidence flies. Lana and Colin are avid anglers, clearly passionate about the waters they fish. The film captures the dual nature of fly fishing: at times very serious, and at others, centered on good company, shared laughter, and the joy of exploring the places the sport takes you.

Lana Richardson has been an Ambassador for Fulling Mill for several years now. Growing up next to a north highland spate river, learning how to fly fish was as natural as learning how to ride a bike for Lana. From age 4, she was independently catching trout in small streams and hill lochs, and from around 5, fishing for Atlantic salmon began. After catching her first salmon at age 6 on a stoat’s tail, her love of fly fishing was truly ignited. Lana primarily fishes in the highlands of Scotland for Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and sea trout, although if it can be caught with a fly, she will give any species and technique a go. Lana lives in the Scottish Highlands and works in the habitat conservation & land management sector. She is fortunate to have fisheries conservation and management as part of her day-to-day job. Alongside her main career, she also enjoys guiding and teaching beginners how to fish. Any time she isn’t at work, she is almost always found casting a line somewhere.
