A three-day ode to fly fishing from the Sierra to the Pacific will include classes, seminars, demonstrations, and wall-to-wall displays of everything that is new in the sport: rods and reels, boots, waders, personal watercraft and destinations to use them in the annual Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show, February 27-March 1 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fri.; 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sat; and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sun. Fly Fishing Show® admission is $20 for one day, $35 for two days and $45 for three. Children under age 5 are free as are Boy and Girl Scouts under age 16 in uniform. Children 6-12 are $5. Active military with an ID are $10.

 

 

Gary Borger, Mac Brown, Glenda Powell, Philip Rowley, Landon Mayer, Tim Flagler, George Revel, Matt Heron, John Sherman and Whitney Gould are among the class instructors, demonstrators, and seminar leaders at the show. There will be 17 classes with fly fishing experts including a day-long special session with Dr. Borger and Brown on Thurs., Feb. 26, the day before the show opens. Enrolment in the Borger/Brown 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. course is $625. Standard half-day classes are $100.

About 100 free Destination Theater presentations are on tap including the Trinity River, Oregon’s Best Trout Fisheries, the Truckee River, Klamath River, and Pyramid Lake. There are 25 seminars including Streamer Methods for Better Quality Fish, 10 Best Fisheries in California, Pyramid Lake Today, Nymphing from Top to Bottom, Fishing the Non-Hatch Times, An Introduction to Trout Spey, Shallow Water-Big Rewards, and Fly Fishing the California Delta. Nineteen casting demonstrations are scheduled at indoor and outdoor ponds.

The California premiere of the two hour International Fly Fishing Film Festival is Feb. 27 with a pre-party from 5:30 and films at 7. Tickets are $17 in advance or $20 at the door. The event has nearly $100,000 in national door prizes and $10,000 in local prizes including tackle and trips to Alaska, Patagonia, Iceland, South Africa, and Brazil. Show attendees may vote on 41 categories of products entered in the “Best Of” Consumer Choice Awards including rods, reels, waders, boots, packs, Polarised eyewear, accessories and apparel. Awards are jointly sponsored by Fly Fusion Magazine and Fly Fishing Journeys. Fly Fishers International (FFI) hosts the free Fly Fishing Learning Center with fly tying, casting instruction and other fly fishing information aimed at newcomers to the sport.
