To complete the story on these flies we decided to hit the water with Norm and along with his trusted BWO pattern, the Low Water Baetis, put these flies to work. Take notes as Norman demonstrates how to best fish these patterns on a standard euro nymph set-up, from the beginning stages of a hatch to the full on emergence of adult Blue Wings!
About Norman: Norman Maktima is an Umpqua Signature Tyer, former member of the US Men’s Fly Fishing team and the current coach of the Women’s US team. Norm works at Los Pinos Fly Shop and guides part time on the San Juan river. Growing up in Pecos, New Mexico, Norm picked up fly fishing at the age of 7 which led to a life-long passion. Norm fished his way to becoming a member of the Us Fly Fishing Youth team, becoming the World Youth champion in 1998. With 23 years of competition under his belt, he has went on to achieve a National championship in 2018 for the Men’s team and a world championship in 2025 coaching the Women’s team. Norm brings his wealth of experience in both the competitive world and in guide life to his fly design.
