Finding your way on the Rettenbach

The Rettenbach is a small river that can also be fished through Hurch Flyfishing in Salzburg. It flows for some distance through a kind of canyon, but other parts are more accessible.

The stretch that can be fished through Hurch Flyfishing is some 5,5 kilometers in length.

After some thunder and heavy rain, the river was high and dirty for one day, but was nicely fishable again a day later.

This early in the season there are few insects about, we did see some small mayflies and sedges however in the afternoon when the temperature was quite comfortable.

Fishing nymphs upstream or wet flies downstream is a good bet when there are few fish rising.

Rods of 8 to 8,5 foot in length for a #5 weight line are fine for a river like this.

Barbless flies are the rule here as well.

The Gasthof Rettenbachmühle is right there along the waterside and a nice place to take a lunch break.

Jörg landed a number of nice brown trout on wet flies, but came across some lively rainbow trout as well.

After missing a few takes, this fish held on to the wet fly that Cora Nicolasen swung across the river.

The stretch is all the way up from the place where the Rettenbach runs into the Traun at Bas Ischl upstream to the place where the Grabenbach runs into the Rettenbach. There are at least seven parking spots where you can leave your car, but access to the river is difficult at places (steep cliffs, rocks, deep pools etc.).
