An investment of AU$6 million announced this week looks set to have a big impact on the recreational fishing industry in Australia’s Northern Territory.

The funding will indirectly create jobs for tackle shops, fishing tour operators, boat sales and servicing, tourism and other retail sectors, says the Territory’s leading fishing organisation. Primary Industries Minister Ken Vowles pledged the money for the fast track funding of key infrastructure projects and said it would make a ‘big difference’ to Northern Territory anglers.

“Fishing is a huge part of what makes the Territory a great place to live and visit. It’s a big part of what attracts people and keeps them here,” he said. David Ciaravolo, Chief Executive of the Amateur Fishermen’s Association, said anglers welcomed the news and hoped the ‘scale of the opportunity’ would open up new fishing areas.

Projects prioritised for fast tracking include the completion of a new boat ramp at Shady Camp and a car park at Dundee Beach. Labor pledged at last year’s election to spend AU$50 million over five years on recreational fishing infrastructure.
