Fishing on Moy almost at standstill

Very few fish were reported from the River Moy this week. The prolonged drought and extremely bright conditions brought fishing almost to a standstill.

Amongst the very few successful anglers were Donal Carney, Dublin with an 8 lbs. fish on fly from the Weir Pool in Ballina and Jean Jacques Daurat, France, who had 2 salmon (one released) on Cloongee. Also on Cloongee, Thierry Coulm, France, caught and released 2 fish on bubble & fly. On the Foxford Fishery, David, Robert & Gillian Taggart all caught their first salmon. A few fish were also reported from Rinanney, Armstrong’s, Gannon’s, East Mayo and the Foxford Salmon Anglers’ water.

Sun tans but no salmon on Melvin

Lough Melvin is as low as it can get and with the bright and sometimes very blustery conditions over the fortnight ( Monday 24th April to Sunday 7th May), there has been little angling effort. Hence there is very little to report on but sun tans! Nice complaint most would say.

Very little water and very little fishing on the Drowes

Angling report from Monday 24th April to Sunday 7th May 2017 (2 weeks). The River Drowes continued to run at extremely low levels and in fact fishery owner Shane Gallagher states that it is the lowest he has ever seen the river for the month of April!

Over the past fortnight the low water allied to very bright summery conditions in the northwest have meant that very few rods having been fishing the Drowes and even many of the guests booked into the accommodations have been busying themselves with pike instead! There were only a small number of salmon recorded over the fortnight due in great part no doubt, to a lack of angling effort.

Mr Norman recorded a 10lb salmon caught and released from the Mill Pool on a Cascade fly. On the 2nd there were 3 salmon recorded at the Sea Pools. The fishery needs some serious rain at this point!

River Drowes
The Drowes Fishery is one of Ireland’s premier spring salmon and grilse fisheries. The river is some 5 miles in length, with over 70 named pools, flowing from Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay and entering the sea at Tullaghan, just outside Bundoran. The Drowes has a wide variety of water suitable for all fishing methods, including several miles of good fly water and deeper slower moving pools suitable for spinning and bait fishing.
