Mayfly fishing on different lakes in Ireland

Plenty of small trout and some big ones taking mayfly on Ennell

Angling guide Mick Flanagan tells us: Plenty of boats were out and about last week on Ennell, as the first few spent Mayfly dropped back out on the Lake. Many anglers reported catching quite a number of small fish, but the odd good trout was also caught.

Last Sunday May 28th Lough Ennell Anglers hosted the Rex Beaumount Cup, and hopefully the weather has been okay for this event. Last season Mullingar angler Kenny Kiernan produced a lump of an Ennel trout weighing 4.332lbs to win on the day. Fishing is from 11am-7pm.

Mount Dalton trout lake fishing well

Reporting from Mount Dalton is angling journalist and guide Mick Flanagan…

This beautiful brown trout fishery near Rathconrath just outside Mullingar opened on May 1st. Last week Kells anglers Sean Condren and Benny Campbell had a cracking evening boating 6-7 hard fighting trout, and loosing as many fish on both wet and dry flies.

The lake is fly only and there are two boats for hire on Mount Dalton, and no engines are allowed. So not only do you enjoy a days fishing, you also get a lot of exercise rowing the boat.

I have got a lot of enquiries about fishing on Mount Dalton and you have to book a boat in advance of traveling to fish the lake. The contact number is +353 (0)44 – 9355 241, and early morning is best time to ring, or late evening.

Lough Owel was a hive of activity last week, and will be well fished in the coming days. On Saturday next May 27th Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association host the National Fly Angling Championships, which will see fly anglers from all over Ireland competing for places on the Irish team. Local angler Brendan Murray and L.O.T.P.A. officer has got the task of doing boat manager, and we wish the club and all anglers competing all the best on the day.

OWEL ANGLERS

Last weekend many anglers were out on Owel, with some nice fish being caught on the fly and troll. I did a few hours with Frank McKeon and we boated 5 lovely trout, and 3 perch just chilling out trolling small colorful lures. Pauric Martin once again had a good day on Owel, and caught trout on a Minnow Luminous lure.
