Angling on Mask a bit hit and miss

Ronan Cusack reports that angling on Mask has been a bit hit and miss recently as the 2017 season comes close to an end.

Westport Angling Club held the Joe Berry cup on Mask and Carra last week which was won by Jonathan O’Grady of Westport with four fish for 5.75lbs. Ronan Gibbons also from Westport had four fish for 5lbs and in third position was David Lennon with four fish for 4.25lbs. Alan Kennedy won the heaviest fish prize with a fish of 2.5lbs which was caught on Carra.

Local Ballinrobe angler Kevin Sheridan had three fish pulling wets in the deep last week (Best fish 1.75lbs). John McHale from Castlebar had a cracking 6lb trout on a daddy over the weekend. This was John’s first time ever fishing on lough Mask.

The VFI (Vintners Federation Ireland) held their annual two day competition on Mask last week which was supported by 127 anglers from across the country. In first place was Peter Byrne from Castlebar with seven trout for 9.77lbs. Second was Pat Gallagher from Duleek Co Meath with one trout for 7.57lbs. Third place went to Johnny Moroney from Shannon with six fish for 6.56lbs. Michael Twohig from Kanturk took 4th with six fish for 6.51lbs. Pat Gallagher also won the heaviest fish prize.
