Declan Gibbons reports that anglers and service providers are reporting slow to moderate angling activity for this time of year. A drop in temperatures resulting in less hatches and heavy recent rainfall, causing lake levels to rise are not the most conducive to good angling, however some anglers enjoyed good late season sport and are featured below.
In the Oughterard area Gerry Molloy www.loughcorriboughterard.com reports mixed fishing in the area and some guests having sport on wet fly and dapping crickets. Phil Pead, visiting from the UK, had nine trout for his stay with the best being 2.75lbs. Also staying with Gerry were four visiting anglers from the Czech Republic who had seven fish for their trip to Lough Corrib. Also in the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy (+353 (0)87 – 9604 170) was fishing himself on Tuesday last and had two fish for his outing on wet flies, with the best fish 2lbs. Staying in the Oughterard area Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (+353 (0)91 – 552 550) reports that Pat Gallagher from Limerick landed a cracking fish of 4.25lbs on wet fly on Sunday last. Ronnie McAteer, Fermanagh and Ian Machette, Lurgan had four fish for two days with the best fish being 2.5lbs. Carol Neill from England had one fish on dry fly of 2.25lbs. Dublin angler Eddie Rowe had one fish of 2lbs on dry fly for his day’s fishing on Corrib at the weekend. Nessan Kelly from Dublin was also on Corrib for a day out of Ardnasillagh and had a fish of 1.5lbs in the deep.
In the Cornamona area John Somerville fished on Saturday last and had a fish just under 4lbs on a Silver Dabbler which he took a quick photo of and sportingly released.
John also fished again on Sunday last and had one fish on a dry Olive Wulff, also sportingly returned. Staying in the Cornamona area Richard Molloy of Ballard Shore Boat Hire & Self Catering (+353 (0)87 – 2879 339) reports on visiting Swiss anglers enjoying their stay in the area and catching numerous trout on trolling, spinning and wet fly with all fish sportingly returned.
Ted Wherry of Mayfly Lodge Ballynalty (+353 (0)87- 4305 957) reports mixed fishing the week gone by around the Lime Island and Ballindiff areas on olive and sedge patterns. Peter Dixon from the UK had three fish on Tuesday last with the best fish being 4.5lbs, and Sue Wherry also had a fish of 2lbs.
In the Greenfields area on Thursday last Sean Dixon from Ennis had two fish on wet flies – his first fish 2lbs and his second 2.25lbs. In the Greenfields area on Saturday last Frank Reilly and Peter McGuinness boated three fish for 5lbs for their day’s fishing, all on wet flies and all sportingly returned.
On Sunday last Ennis & District Anglers hosted a competition out of Greenfields in which thirteen anglers participated, and eight fish were caught with a 14 inch limit in operation. In 1st place was Thomas O’Loughlin with two fish for 7lbs 2oz. 2nd place went to John Ryan with two fish for 7lbs, and John also had heaviest fish – a trout of 5lbs 9oz. Seamus O’Loughlin took 3rd place with two fish for 5lbs 5oz.
