The fly fishing industry is hoping that a new film about the sport will have a similar impact to A River Runs Through It, the 1992 movie starring Tom Skerritt and Brad Pitt that prompted an upsurge in participation.
The film, Mending the Line, is currently in production, with companies including Simms Fishing Products, RO Drift Boats, Tom Morgan Rodsmiths, Bozeman Reels and Sage all contributing to the project. Like A River Runs Through It, the project is being shot in Montana, the home of script writer Stephen Camelio who, together with director Joshua Caldwell, secured Brian Cox, an Emmy Award-winner, and Sinqua Walls for the leading roles.
Walls plays a marine wounded in Afghanistan who is struggling with his trauma in a Montana hospital. There he meets Cox, a Vietnam veteran who is dealing with his own trauma but helps the younger man to cope with his issues. Camelio’s father was a Vietnam veteran exposed to Agent Orange and was part of the inspiration for the film. He sees the film as a way to help others who are suffering.
Filming in Montana
The idea got off the ground two years ago after Camelio won the Big Sky Film grant from the Montana Film Office. Caldwell believes that filming in the Treasure State is an integral part of the movie. “To shoot it here in Montana, in Bozeman, in Livingston, on the Yellowstone, on the Gallatin, is incredibly special. To me as a director, the location is such a big part of the movie,” he said. Stephen has scripted a beautiful story about overcoming trauma and the healing power of fly fishing.”
Other partners for the project include Warriors and Quiet Waters. Camelio rewrote the script to incorporate the organisation’s ranch in the Gallatin Valley.
