Edison Fly Fishing Show begins 2023 angling season on January 27, 28 and 29

The 2023 edition of The Fly Fishing Show rolls into the New Jersey Convention & Conference Center Jan. 27-29 with everything for the fly-fishing angler from new products, seminars, classes, fly tying and fly casting demonstrations, and theatre presentations to fishing art, lodges and vacation destinations.

The Edison Convention Center is at 97 Sunfield Ave.; the nearby Sheraton Edison Hotel Raritan Center offers discounted show accommodations. Parking is free. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fri.; 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sat; and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sun. Fly Fishing Show® admission is $18 for one day, $28 for two days and $38 for three days. Children under age 5 are free as are Boy and Girl Scouts under age 16 in uniform. Children 6-12 are $5. Active military with an ID are $10. There will be 33 Classes with the Experts including a day-long advanced fly casting course taught by Dr. Gary Borger and Mac Brown on Thurs., Jan. 26. Cost for the full day advanced class is $625.

Standard class registration is $90 and includes Introduction to Fly Casting with Sheila Hassan, Nymph Fishing with Jason Randall, Sight Fishing Secrets with Landon Mayer, Euro Nymphing 101 with Phil Rowley, Casting Strategies with Borger, Women Only with Hassan, Practical Nymphing with Ed Engle, Basic Casting Mechanics with Dusty Wissmath, Reading the Water with Alice Owsley and Fly Tying for Everyone with Tim Cammisa. The Classes with Experts registration fee includes admission to the show for that day.

There are 18 free seminars daily including Finding Small Stream Nirvana with Steve Culton, Jersey Fall Blitzes with Jim Freda, Tips to Catch More Trout with Pat Dorsey, Dry Fly Tactics with Barry Beck, Finding and Catching Great Lakes Steelhead with Gary Edwards, Introduction to Saltwater Fly Fishing with Jeff Currier, Learn to Tie Simple Patterns with Landon Mayer, Spiders and Soft Hackles with John Shaner, Smallmouth Bass on the Fly with Jake Villwock and How to Find Trout in Lakes with Rowley.

Among the Destination Theater presentations are Fly Fishing in Iceland, Tenkara 101, Fly Fishing the Louisiana Coast, Labrador’s Monster Brookies, Montana – Around Big Sky, Fly Fishing the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Fly Fishing Northern Iceland, Fishing for Tailing Permit, Fly Fishing South America, Dry Fly Strategies for the Upper Delaware River, Large Trout of the Southern Hemisphere: Chile and New Zealand, Montana’s Kootenai Country, The Out Islands of the Bahamas, and a Women’s Roundtable Discussion: Voices for a Better Tomorrow.

Casting demonstrations are scheduled in the show’s two ponds by Currier, Borger, Brown Simon Gawesworth, Karin Miller, Whitney Gould, and Nick Conklin. Featured fly tiers include Engle, Mayer, Dorsey, Thomas Baltz, Jake Villwock, Rowley, Cammisa, Jonny King, Flagler and Cordiero. More than $30,000 worth of national door prizes are up for grabs including a week’s guided fishing for two anglers at Tarpon Caye Lodge, Belize, valued at $8,400; SET’s Spring Creek Lodge in Northern Patagonia for one, $5,450; a $5,000 credit on any Fish Partner Iceland trip listed on their website; five night, four days fishing package at Swains Cay Lodge, Bahamas Out Islands valued at $4,685; and two night, two days of fishing at the Big Land Lodge, Labrador, Canada, valued at approximately $4,000.
