RIO introduces ‘most sustainable’ fly spool ever-made

RIO Products’ new compostable spool is the most sustainable fly line spool ever made and will keep 20,000lb of plastics out of landfills every year, says the Far Bank Enterprises brand.

Made from 100% recyclable products, the new spools use the same geometry as the current plastic spools to ensure compatibility with line winders. They will be shipped with all RIO lines later this year. Once anglers have spooled their line, they can simply drop the spool into the recycling bin or compost pile.

“Plastics spools no longer align with our vision of wild landscapes and clean waterways,” says the Washington state company. “We cannot work and play in the great outdoors without taking steps to reduce our footprint. This new spool is a major step in that direction.”

RIO’s efforts have been rewarded with a 2023 Ameristar Award in the sustainability category by the Institute of Packing Pros.
