SUPER Realistic Fly Pattern | Repeat Offender Crayfish

Signature Tyer Joe Goodspeed

In this video, Signature Tyer Joe Goodspeed demonstrates how to tie his updated Mini Crayfish jig. Joe’s Mini Cray has been a staple in our jig boxes, and now version 2.0 brings extra heat with updates to the material list and design. Meet Joe Goodspeed’s Repeat Offender, a super realistic fly pattern that imitates juvenile crayfish. This crayfish fly fools big, wary trout — time and time again. This fly excels when fishing long nymph leaders and long rods. With a modified euro-nymphing approach, you can fish the Repeat Offender effectively at a distance and at deep depths. Big trout don’t easily make mistakes, but when this jig realistically thumps the bottom of a deep pool, trout move to eat it.

The Repeat Offender crayfish fly builds on the super‑realistic look and movement of Joe’s original Mini Cray. Joe packs a ton of weight into a small profile, and the proportions of the fly are incredibly important. This buggy bullet of a fly gets right into the strike-zone of the deepest holes. With the right approach and tactics, this fly fishes well at depths you may never have effectively covered before. Naturally, some huge trout have fallen victim to the Repeat Offender. The Repeat Offender blurs the lines between big nymph and jig streamer. Watch how Joe Goodspeed fishes his Mini Cray to better understand the applications of these super-realistic crayfish flies.

By covering the tungsten beads with Duraskin, trout won’t see the sheen/shine of the beads and question the presentation. Additionally, the sound and vibration of the fly when bouncing along the bottom is dulled by the Duraskin, making for a much more realistic presentation when fishing to the most wary fish. Joe uses a number of fly tying materials that Fulling Mill does not sell, but we have some worthy substitutes. You’ll find nearly all the materials you need to tie the Repeat Offender in the links below!

Joe Goodspeed has been working in the fly fishing industry since 2008. First, he was a fly line producer, and now he’s a fly rod developer. He’s responsible for designing some of the best euro nymphing rods available on the market today. Joe is an exceptional subsurface fly angler—whether that be nymphs or streamers—and has an incredibly analytical mind when it comes to fly design. Every single component of his flies is added with intention, and there’s nothing extra. Plus, he designs his flies to be durable so that you can catch fish after fish without them taking too much wear. Joe’s Mini Cray is one of his most well-known patterns, but he has several others that you absolutely should fish on the water, including the Stunt Mouse and ESP caddis.
