The Mayfly Hatch Pt. 2 | Fly Tying with Signature Tyer Paul Procter | Paul’s Active Mayfly Dun

In this video, Signature Tyer Paul Procter demonstrates how he ties the Active Mayfly Dun pattern, which beautifully mimics Mayfly adults found during a hatch. This upright dry fly is one of Paul’s must-have patterns for imitating Mayfly duns on the water and is often the go-to pattern Paul will fish after Mayfly emergence. The Mayfly (Ephemera danica) is one of the most widely celebrated and anticipated mayfly hatches of the season on UK chalk streams and throughout Europe. Pretty soon, anglers will be trying their luck on the water in search of large trout sipping Mayfly, so tie on some of Paul’s Mayfly patterns and crack the code!

Throughout the video, Paul shares tons of tying tips and tricks for building proportionally accurate and more durable imitations. Paul not only shows how he ties his Signature Mayfly dun, but he also describes how he fishes it amidst a hatch. As discussed, you can dead drift this dry fly, or thoughtfully animate the fly while it’s adrift by simply lifting the rod tip or making small movements to your line. During a major hatch of Mayfly, sometimes a little movement can be a trigger for the trout and help make your fly stand out amongst the naturals on the water.
