EFTTA ’s man in Brussels has welcomed the bass bag limits imposed on recreational fisherman for 2020.
Following a two-day EU Council Fisheries meeting, it was decided that anglers and spearfishers in the northern region will be allowed to keep two fish a day during an extended nine month season, an increase of one bass over seven months. EFTTA and the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) had asked for a three bass limit over seven months, In southern Europe the bass bag limit has been reduced from three to two. The minimum landing size remains unchanged at 42cm.
Jan Kappel, EFTTA’s Public Affairs Officer, said: “Everything considered, this is a good result. I am happy that the ministers did not follow the Commission’s proposal to roll over the one fish bag limit with an open season of only seven months. I am also happy that the targeting of bass recreationally with set nets has been banned.”
“This result would never have been achieved without the immense efforts of EFTTA and the EAA. The ministers followed the scientific advice, which gave room for a small increase in the total fishing mortality for bass. The increase was shared between the recreational and commercial fishing.”
